Opening and closing

Anna and I talk about this sight in our garden often.

The butter cups wait to open every morning and when the morning sun rays fall on them, they open and remain open for about two hours and close up for the rest of the 24 ours.

This cycle is fascinating to watch. Each flower therefore has a long life unlike many flowers who fade after a while.

I wonder what is the sensor for the flowers to open and close! It might be its photosensitive nature. But even when there is no sunshine the flowers open and close.

So there is an internal sensor or a clock which keeps the cycle to take place everyday in sunshine or in rain.

I have recently reflected on this dimension in human behaviour. What is within us which helps us to behave in a sociable and responsible manner and hep to live mindfully of others!

It is our inner consciousness of our call in life. We can live exclusively for ourselves or keep ourselves open to others so that we leave behind goodness and thoughtfulness in the lives of others.

However it is important that we pay attention to replenish our lives with inner resources to be in this giving role lest we feel spent and exhausted.

I find taking five short periods during the day of five to seven minutes each time to 'return' to myself and to be in touch myself. Such an exercise of habitual returning to oneself is one way of refreshing ourselves of the mission of of our lives. We are inclined to mind our business alone as it is easier. But we are humans because we are created for relationships.

Thinking of others is an activity that comes from an inner awakening which is what short periods of interior silence can do. In that interior silence we are drawn by God of our lives to experience His loving presence which makes us to stay open to others!
