Knowing the child- 3

The first photo of a rose bud opening was a fascinating sight. The three other photos taken on the third,  fifth and seventh days tell the story of the flower opening progressively to its fullness!  The bud became the flower.

A newborn becomes an infant, toddler, pre-schooler, early schooler, pre-adolescent, adolescent and a youth!

This journey of a child is a mystery of the unfolding experience, most parents take great delight in to watch and admire!

The pre-adolescent child is different from the infant that he or she was!

A child health specialist is a doctor trained to know the child across these transitions. It is his or her opportunity to point out to parents the transitions and transformations taking place in the lives of a child in order to support parents to develop a correspondingly maturing parenting role !

A family who came to talk about their six years old child about him not adjusting well at school, happened to mention that he slept late around mid night when parents went to bed. Parents stayed late as that was the only time they had for themselves after a long day at work. They overlooked that an early school going child needed nine to ten hours of sleep. Their son got only seven hours of sleep habitually.

Three weeks later, after they followed the different plans we discussed, they telephoned to say that their son was comfortable at school and not  restless at home. The parents having changed their sleep-wake rhythm to get eight hours of sleep felt better, unlike in the past where a feeling of tiredness had prevailed.

A child is a growing and changing person!

Parents too are required to grow and change to comprehend the child as a person in his or her environment.

The second photo above, with water drops in the petals of the opening flower symbolised to me of the tender graces and care, children need in their growing up years!

A youth that a child shall be in two decades, is the perspective that parents need when they are engaged in being with their infant!

Meditation of my heart- 20

I look out for butterflies and dragon flies in our garden and find them only occasionally in the recent months!

There is something extra-ordinarily special about them. They are small, beautiful to behold and live hidden in the grass and foliage in every garden.

I often think of them as treasures in a garden!

I happened to read the 28th chapter of the book of Job in the Old Testament of the Bible, where Job told about 'Earth's treasures'. Job having lost his wealth, children, and himself becoming unwell could not be consoled for his enormous loss. Even his wife turned against him ( Book of Job chapters 1 and 2).

It was in this awful state of distress and despair, Job had the insight stated in the 28th chapter, as a response to his friends who tarried with him.

His statement that 'Iron is taken from dust, and from rock copper is smelted, man puts an end to darkness, and to the farthest end he searches out.... He dams up the streams from flowing; and what is hidden he brings out to the light' V 2, 3, 11).

Job offered his tribute to people who make provisions upon earth for us to live well.

Job's search was: ' Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding ? Thus it is hidden from eyes of the living, and concealed from the birds of the sky' (v20,21).

I asked myself where does the exquisite colourfulness of the butterfly come from?. Where does the intricate and delicate design of the wings of the dragon fly come from?

But Job even in his state of anguish and loss did not stop there. He said  this further about God: 'And to man God said, behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom ; and to depart from evil is understanding' (v 28).

To be patient in pursuing God in one's life even in difficult times is the way to find the mystery hidden in our situations in our lives!

Some people whom I talk to feel tormented by injustice and evil all around.

Is that all we see?

A young consultant engaged in rehabilitation told me that her aspiration was to create custom made wheel chair for children at an affordable cost! What a thought of concern as many children who need wheel chair cannot afford it because of its prohibitive cost! An interest beyond her gain! I found the spirit of wisdom in that thought.

The fear of the Lord is wisdom and to depart from evil is understanding!

It was when Job was passing through an experience of loss and grief, he discovered the source of wisdom and path for wisdom! reason one

Wisdom is concealed!

It can be concealed in our experiences of life!

It is for this reason, one requires to live centred to receive insight to seek the path to wisdom!

Meditation of my heart -8 !

This plant Euphorbia Geroldii which gives flowers, known as Thornless crown of thorns, is in a pot in the corner of our garden flowering for about six months now.

This plant is considered to represent messages of purity and vitality. Some think of this plant to be resilient to affirm the character of resilience in humans. The plant grows and flowers without much effort.

The large red petals and the yellow tiny flowers in the centre appear distinct in appearance and its habitat. It withstands heat and can survive in desert conditions.

It is both an indoor and outdoor plant. It has some medicinal values particularly in purifying the air. It is used as a herb with many medicinal applications

What caught my attention in the recent weeks about this plant is its resilience to the inclement weather. It is in a corner in the garden, where it is exposed to sun and rain and yet not showing any signs of change.

It stands as a plant that is nursing the environment !

I came across an exhortation from an Old Testament prophet Isaiah, in the book of Isiah 1: 17, ' Learn to do good, Reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan and plead the cause of the widow' !

It is a statement of purpose about the way one is called to live!

I carry this with me as I order the time before me . The call is to live with a thought towards others.

As one gets older, the traction is towards oneself for various reasons. The excuse of the senior citizens is their weak body and reduced energy!

To think of others and living with the call to do  good is a mission even for those who are older, retired and limited in some ways!
