An evening with Bee Eaters !

I spotted yesterday evening, four green Bee Eaters frolicking in the paddy filed beside the stream adjacent to our property! They were in different positions on the cable frequently flying in to the air, to catch a dragon fly! I was able to capture one of them succeeding in its attempt!

Following the prolonged monsoon, I spotted them for the first time yesterday. Now they are here to stay. I remember watching similar presence in the previous years from the pre-winter season to the pre-summer. Their habits of feeding are predictable. With their sharp eyes, they spot a dragon fly either in the air or resting on a plant. They fly into the air or to the plants  having spotted them. I find them succeed only a few times. But they attempt several times.

They are birds who have a well groomed body, hues of greenish complexion in the plumage with a high frequency of musical tone in the bird call. They are small to see from a distance.

What fascinates me about them is their alertness and briskness. In fact they stay so still on a cable that one can miss its presence ordinarily. Its sharpness to see a dragon fly approaching the cable is remarkable. It does not waste its energy to track a fly, but waits for it to reach its vicinity!

A small bird but with such an elegance in its plumage and skill in catching a fly!
