A jackfruit used to be sold for two rupees in my village when I was a child. Now it is sold for 20 rupees a kilogram. An average jackfruit might cost about three hundred rupees now. In fact, the fruit was given away free in our village during my childhood.
Ever since the multiple health benefits of consuming jack fruit have been mentioned, there is an increasing demand for these fruits. There are about fifteen different ways the fruit can be used. It is a delicacy desert for some.
Every home would have at least one jack fruit trees in its compound. It grows up to be a tree once planted over about five years. The sapling we planted five years ago gave us the first fruit during this season. The other tall jack fruit tree in our property is at least fifty years old and yields well for us and our neighbours.
I feel fascinated by this evolution- a poor man's food now has come to be a delicacy in the rich man's dining table!
