I had to decongest the Mac as the hard disc needed more space. I transferred hundreds of photos of 2025 in to an external hard disc. During that process I stopped to watch the series of photographs of one season, when there were flowers in the hedge plants in our garden.
The purple rumped Sun birds were regular visitors to gather nectar from these flowers. The acrobatic positioning of the bird on the flowers to gather nectar stood out in the photos above. Its gesture of blanching on the fragile flowers was a captivating sight. I thought that the sunbird was highly skilled to do it as its weight on the fragile flowers would have normally crumbled the flowers destabilising its position to feed. Yet it managed it well. The bird was used to overcoming challenges!
There was no evidence of giving up or frustration in the way the Sunbird behaved. It adjusted or repositioned itself on the flowers to feed.
One essential quality humans acquire from life experience is Emotional intelligence. Daniel Goleman, while writing extensively on this adult resource described emotional intelligence with five skills : Self awareness, Self regulation, Motivation, Empathy and Social skill.
Let me quote from his book, The Emotionally Intelligent Leader: "Emotional intelligence is born largely in the neurotransmitters of the brain's limbs system, which governs feelings impulses, and drives. Research indicates that the limbic system learns best through motivation, extended practice and feed back. Compare this with the kind of learning that goes on in the neocortex, which governs analytical and technical ability. The neocortex grasps concepts and logic..." (p13).
It was while sighting the Sunbirds engaged in problem solving with ease and comfort, my thoughts turned to its application in human context. A person who grows in emotional intelligence is composed and comfortable while engaging a challenge, or obstacle or resistance! It is part of the advanced education in personal formation!
