Gymnastics !

Three dragon flies with an unusual demonstration of their balancing  skills!

How they rest on a surface with their tender hind and forelegs in an angle which is certainly difficult to maintain normally!

As I ponder about it, It occurred t me that there are numerous such 'surprises' which almost border to 'miracles' in nature!

There might be scientific explanations of this skill of dragon flies!

But that does not take away the delight an surprise such sights bring to us!

To stay 'wondering with a beholding look' is the only tribute we can reasonably offer to the mysteries in creation!

A farewell and Recollection time

One or two farewells in a a year! That seems to be the pattern in the department where I work now!

There were two who were leaving us yesterday. A speech therapist after a year of service and aa post graduate in paediatrics after two weeks!

I was touched by the reflection time of recalling the contributions of the speech therapist- full of admiration for the creative, critical and collaborative contributions! I wish we do not have to wait for a farewell to offer appreciative feedback! I have been an advocate of a fortnightly debriefing time in the department so that there is an ongoing upbuilding of each other. It is yet to materialise!

Th post-graduate student got integrated well in the department. He was enthusiastic and a participant in the goings on the department ! I feel encouraged by younger people who think academically and sense the thrill of clinical examination of a child to find the hidden!

The fortnightly clinical meeting is another academic activity which I hope is one way of connecting with other departments and making an effort to create a team of specialists who can collaborate better for optimising child care in the institution!

When water Harms!

How to keep the water away from harming the trees in the garden! This has been a challenge for the last six years since Anna and I returned to live in our cottage.

The leaking canal that runs across the property has adversely affected the nutmeg and coconut trees in the garden. We have trees falling with a wind as the running water across the farm caused loose soil around the trees.

I have represented to the local government authorities as the canal requires urgent attention. Three ears back, there was a sudden surge in the water flow, which the authorities tried to contain by reinforcing the concrete walls. Now it is equally bad!

The property in four layers protected by supporting walls can  no longer take in this water flow through the property all the time of the year! During the monsoon there is a layer of water on the surface!

This is the third time in six years we are rebuilding the damaged walls.

To safely keep a farm and tend the field is a demanding exercise!

Every time I walk through this part of the property, I realise that water can also do harm! It does not have to become a flood to cause harm!  Water in a wrong place and in large quantity harms.

Water is good and life giving. It turns otherwise sometimes!

Friendships bring abundance in our lives. But it is necessary to protect friendships from becoming manipulative, demanding, choking or one-sided.

When friendships turn sour, it harms and hurts.

The next step need not be always restoration, but healing, forgiveness and acceptance of the new reality of distance... for short or long periods!

Tilling and Planting!

This is not a common sight anymore in the field, as farmers prefer to leave the land uncultivated due to the enormous cost to plant and the risk of damage to the crops due to pests or weather stress before they are ready for harvest.

Anna and I stopped to watch this sight yesterday on our way to work, because of the activity in the field. On one side the field is tilled and getting ready for transplanting the rice saplings. In another area the tender saplings of the rice are being gathered to transplant in the field that is getting ready. Then there were the waterbirds in the tilled ground finding their food for the day!

A farmer is a metaphor in more than one way!

A farmer creates food for all of us. He provides that for anyone who is in need of food! He does not choose the buyers. He would not even know who buys his food. He gets his price for the grains that he sells, which is his grain in one sense. But of late, the farmer does not get enough to live on as the prices are decided by the market economy which favours those who can control the prices to benefit them.

What are his other services! He turns the ground to be fertile. He offers work for the farm labourers. He plants, keeps a vigil over his farm and harvests. He gathers the grain and markets them ! He is the reason for food at home and in our eateries. He makes livelihood from the farming with demanding work land.

A farmer is therefore a provider for others.

In a brief chat with a farmer, he told me that he farms the field for his neighbours, because for about forty years his neighbours bought milk, eggs, vegetables and grains from him.

A farmer labours not just for this benefits but also as a service for others!

I had a chat with a colleague yesterday on the question, 'For whom are we labouring' as health care professionals!

For ourselves or for benefitting others!

A farmer reminds me that 'others also are his focus'!

A stone tells its story!

This is a granite stone found in the pile of stones unloaded by a truck for building our broken wall. The stones were brought  from a quarry three kilometres away.

What intrigued me was the hole in one stone. It was hole created by a machine to load it with the dynamite to break the mass of stone upon a hill! When the wick was finally lighted, the combustion pressure would have splintered and scattered the stones!

This stone bears the mark of its story!

It is now a stone in the wall that is built!

It was displaced from its place where it existed for a long time!

From being a part of a mass of stone on a hill, it is now a piece in a wall!

It represents a history of years its formation, presence on the hill to form the hill and now it continues its new role giving form and strength to a wall!

It is an anonymous stone. It has no name, or identity of its own! Its function is its identity!

All of us have a story of our heritage, belonging, and becoming. And yet there is an anonymity about most of us.

Who we are and what we do, help to make the whole!

Every time I come the the department to work, I am reminded of ten others in the department who make the place a welcoming place! Each of them together makes the department!

The labour of our hands!

A papaya sapling we planted a year back is now bearing fruit!

We planted and our domestic workers took care of it!

Even the birds and the squirrels benefit from the fruits. Shyamala sometimes leaves a fruit in the tree for the them and plucks the fruit only if they have not fed on them!

This is the cycle of life! We receive fruits from our labour and offer them to others as well!

Yesterday, a family in  a dysfunctional state, with two children took a lot of our attention. Both children with different needs, mother in distress and the father distant to the realities!

The family has enormous needs! There is absence of efforts from the father! That is a big gap, which creates the disorder in the family! I felt the distress of the mother as she narrated her story!

The life in the family is lived by collective efforts. After supper in our home, it was the children who used to clear the table, when they were young! I recall this even now because it was one way there was a sharing of responsibilities to make the home a less labour intensive for any one person!

Our labour is a way of expressing our self-giving for the wellness of others! It is a labour of love and service!

A home becomes a family only when there is self-giving and mindfulness of each other!

The morning puzzle!

It is early morning, Dulcie insists that she walks with me. She then settles down on the parapet and watches me! When I am ready not come into the house, she is reluctant to come in. This look in the photo is that disapproving look.

We have a biscuit tin containing the favourite biscuits of Dulcie and Daffney in the verandah. The moment I pick up the biscuit tin, with utmost care not to make any noise, Dulcie is at the door waiting for her treat!

Yesterday, while a child was insisting to be in the consulting room, when parents were ready to leave,    mother said, 'do you want a chocolate'?. The child instantly was ready to leave the room!

What is common between both of them! A liking for something that conditions their behaviour!

I have been experimenting with Dulcie whether she can be primed to do what is good for her without any incentives!

She has a weekly bath. When Anna or I am ready with the shampoo, soap and towels in hand and looks at her, she would be ready to go the bath room! She struggles a bit if the bath takes a longer time. She is most pleased when she is dry! She also knows that she gets  biscuit at the end of it all. So she waits till that is also over, sometimes waiting looking at the biscuit tin ! There are occasions, when  I do not give her the biscuit. She would bark and come after me and go back to the biscuit tin! If I still do not consent, she would keep waiting!

This a window in to understanding behaviour! Behaviour is conditioned by a feed back of pleasure, acknowledgement or recognition!

That is why acknowledging others who offer any acts of kindness is a good practice!
