A garden is a shared home!

Every day during the last one month, since Rambutan fruit was ready in the trees, Anna and I noticed fruits already eaten by birds or squirrels, who reside in our garden.

I noticed that the Parakeets who are fond of the Rambutan fruit clip the fruit from its site and carries it elsewhere and peels it to eat it.

The Barbets who too are fond of fruits often fed on banana and Guava fruits. They were not seen in the Rambutan trees.

The other regular visitors to the Rambutan trees were squirrels.

I noticed on a few occasions, squirrels with the pulpy fruit of the Rambutan, taken out of the shell, while the shell remained attached to its pedicle in the tree. The squirrels neatly shell the fruit partly and take out the pulp and relish it, while perched in a safe place in the tree.

I noticed in some gardens in our neighbourhood, that the Rambutan trees were covered with nets to protect the fruits from being eaten by parakeets and squirrels.

We felt that the avians and squirrels too can have their share of the fruits during this season. We left some fruits behind after harvesting the fruits for parakeets and squirrels.

We have some papaya fruit trees in our garden, whose fruits are left for the birds and squirrels. That is one way the garden remains a hospitable place for them.

The feeding station is another attraction for birds to stay in the garden.

Anna and I feel good that our garden is a hospitable place for birds and squirrels.

A garden is a shared home between them and us!
