In the land of the former president of the United States of America, Late Abraham Lincoln, where democracy was established, 'for the people, by the people and of the people', the current president is instigating his supporters and forcing the vice-president to undo the voice of the majority of people which elected Mr Joe Biden as the president of the USA in the November 2020 election.
I watched the CNN news for awhile in the evening and this morning when terrible things that had not happened in the USA happened. The current president urged thousands of his supporters who gathered in the lawns of the Capitol Hill yesterday in the afternoon to contest the election verdict and fight till his presidency was continued for another term.
The supporters of the outgoing president entered the Capitol Hill complex where the USA Congress and the Senate were in session to ratify the election of the president elect Mr Joe Biden. They destroyed the property and ransacked the building that the lawmakers in session had to be taken to safety by the riot control police.
As I write this, there is no indication when the Congress and Senate would be able to meet the constitutional requirements of approving the election result.
The autocratic instinct of the rulers of different nations of the worLd, China, Russia, Iraq, etc. are well known. Now I have a suspicion that the USA, and India are in the league. India because, the current central government has least respect for the voice of the people- think of thousands of farmers in New Delhi protesting exposed to the extreme of climate for the scene mont now. The government is even more adamant with no consideration to think of the suffering that the farmers face for a cause dear to their hearts.
What are we to do to bring back the sanity of reason, logic and humanness!
Remember, that this is happening at a time when the hospitals in the USA have no beds to welcome patients of COVID 19. Millions of doses of vaccine have been available for two weeks, but the delivery of vaccination is slow in the USA. The thousands who came for the protest rally did not wear mask or keep physical distance. The outgoing president did not wear a mask.
I come back to ask myself a question:
Where have humans got this spirit of defiance and self-pursuit!
When Adam and Eve in the story of creation ate the forbidden fruit, '...the eyes of both of them were opened and they knew that they were naked and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverage. '(Gen.3:7). What happened following this was, '..that hey heard the sound of the Lord walking in the garden in the cool of the day ans the man and his wife hid themselves form the presence of God..' (v8).
This is the story of humanity. Humans, with the freedom and capacity they were endowed with, have been defiant of the ways set out before them.
Even at that instance, we find a God coming to search for Adam and Eve who were hiding.
This is my consolation and comfort. Whatever might be the extent to which humans would depart from what is assigned and given for humans as stewardship, God is still searching for humans to live in harmony and conciliation and not in defiance or arrogance.
The story of the Good shepherd resonates in the gospels of the New Testament. This God is a loving, coming, and accompanying humans, to get them to the right mind from a defiant mindset.
I wish the Church which is the symbol of this God would be a leaven, voice and light at such a time as this!
I grieve and join all others who grieve! Humans hitherto have had a far better history of living for truth, fairness and justice with some exceptions !
I live in hope as the Lilies blooming in our garden greet us with the warmth of a new morning!
