I watch this sight of children being transported unprotected in two wheelers with fear and distress. Anna and I did this ourselves, thirty five years ago. We were less informed then about its risk and undesirability.
I realize that this is the convenient mode of transport for most low income and middle income group families in india. They will be deprived of a convenience if we were to enforce a law against this.
How can we then make the transport by two wheelers safe and better!
Let us encourage families we know personally to insist on children wearing helmets. I have enquired in the market- cycle helmets and bike helmets for children are available. Children have an increased risk of falling off the two wheeler as some of them may fall asleep without parents noticing it. Can we encourage parents to wear the helmets so that they set the trend! Mothers can wear a harness over the chest in which infants and toddlers can be safe, while riding on a two wheeler. In fact the enforcement of wearing helmets ought to be stricter if children are being transported in the bike.
Let us initiate a whispering campaign against children traveling in two wheelers unprotected!
