Anna and I were privileged to have had few occasions to spend a month in a small group with a spiritual director and formator late, Dr. Hans Burki. One theme he chose to elaborate upon was -ONE LIFE. He did this by helping us to review our lives in seven year periods starting from our childhood.
He symbolized this emphasis on ONE LIFE by placing one rose or candle or one stone on the central table at the meeting room. He kept reminding us gently of this reality in various ways, often using symbols. His parting gift often was a pebble he picked up from the river bed. He chose the pebble because it had a history of of being rolled along the river bed by the current of water. He saw in that pebble a metaphor of life. One pebble becoming smooth and rounded through the journey along the river bed.
Life is in such a continuous formation through our inner and outer events, all provided by God, the mover of our lives. There is a sacredness to our life because God is forming us. The clay becomes a vessel in the potter’s hand. That is what we are becoming, in this one life.
