I found this piece of artistic design, on a slice of wood trunk, placed on the central glass table, in the visitors's room of a retreat house. This held my attention for long.
First of all, I was fascinated by the idea of slicing a flat piece from the trunk of a tree, which was still on the ground after the tree was cut and removed. It was a good use of the tree trunk, rather than letting it decay over a period of time.
Secondly, it is one way of remembering a tree of several years old, which gave shade, fruit, and refreshed the air. It would have been a resting place for many birds. We need to have symbols to recall our memory.
Thirdly, it was placed in the visitor's room as a starter for conversation. In fact, I started the conversation with my host, by referring to this art work.
Fourthly, the rings made of ribbon, placed on it made it elegant, visually attractive and aesthetically appealing. Neither the slice of wood nor the ribbon alone would have made such a visual appeal if either was placed on its own in the room. It is when they were brought together it became special visually. It is by coming together, relationships are formed. By ourselves we are alone and lonely.
Art forms are powerful than words, if the designer attempts to demystify it from an abstract to an experience. That is what I felt about this decoration on the table. It was meant to hold our attention, recall the history of a tree and communicate a message.
