A recent visit to an institution, brought me a new consciousness about the eco-friendly activities in a fragile geographic setting where a flood prone river curves around the boundary of the campus on one side. The trees in the campus are protected. There are planned and nurtured gardens and lots of land overgrowth in the in-between spaces to protect from soli erosion.
A substantial effort of the institution was to spread large stones on the surface and bed of the river every year before the monsoon season to regulate water flow in the river and to protect the river form changing its course.
The river joined by two streams nearer the compound wall of the campus at twenty meters below, is showing response to these efforts with the direction of the flow of water moving away from the compound wall. This ecological engineering was a feast to watch.
It was a the fascinating sight to watch how taming a river is possible and it has a protective effect on directing the flow of the river!
It reminded me of the call for the stewardship of the environment, which provides stability to the ecological system !
The river brings water; water feeds the soil; for this to happen in a regulated way, eco-friendly planning is needed, which was what I witnessed during my visit!
