Fishing in a stream!

I watched a few men fishing in a stream which was being widened. During the fifteen minutes I watched them casting the net three times only to gather leaves and debris in the net! In a conversation, one of them told me that they were not disappointed in not getting fish as it was an exercise to keep their interest and skills alive. I was inspired by their attitude. The task in itself was interesting to them that the outcome was a bonus!

I liked watching them because of the way the net spread out to fall into the water surface and the way the ripples created expanded in two big circles, which faded away at the edge of the water.! Theirs was an artistic performance of holding the net in hand and casting it into the air to allow it to fall widely spread out on the water surface. Following this, in a few minutes they would pull the net to the shore! I noticed their disappointing faces, but after clearing the leaves and debris from the net, they kept doing it again. They were  at it for one hour, although did not catch any fish.

It looked strange to me that they persisted. They honed their skills  this way.

There was something to learn from this for me.

I am at a stage of preparing to close the professional part of my life. I sometimes have wondered whether forty years of clinical work have yielded enough to feel fulfilled. That to me became a question of lesser significance after I watched these men giving themselves to fishing, even when they caught nothing.

They pursued their interest. The rest was not in their hands.

That insight helped me to shift my focus to doing what I am able to do and feel good about it!

I hesitated for a while to pause to watch the fishing, while driving back home. I was glad that I stopped... I gained a life lesson from these men; it stays with me to ponder on!

One and Many!

Anna takes considerable interest in our garden. So we have flowers most of the time of the year.

One flower or many flowers!

Or is it one and many flowers!

For the first plant, one flower each time in a stalk is its way!

For the second plant, many flowers in its stalk is its way!

Both plants together with other plants make a garden!

In a competitive culture, where humans compete to take over others, how profound is the message of a garden!

Each plant has its own nature, colour, fragrance, and longevity, each giving itself to the garden!

I find this a message of some significance! Each person is valuable and enhances each other! That is the common thread in our relationships! That affirms to me that we are connected to each other.

We need to move away from the pursuit of an exclusive personal identity to a collective identity as people of purpose for this generation and the following generations to come.

When we follow the pattern of wealth creation and acquisition in a world of opportunities I feel awful that the desire to promote equal opportunities is low in the priority of those who lead and control the market forces.

About two hundred thousand farmers are parked around New Delhi for the last four days as they feel choked by three new laws which the Indian parliament passed. They fear that the corporate sector is going to take over their rights to produce, market and sell farm produce. The government used water canons, tear gas and even physical force to chase away the farmers with very little thoughtful acts of feeling the compulsions under which farmers live and work. Who in the government has shown sympathy towards these men and women who remain under the open sky day and night, when temperature dipped to the 20 degree celsius range! Are they protesting for no reason!

We live in a culture when the political ideology has taken control of us that it is no more leading us towards people and their needs, but only for pursuing more of political control. I sometimes wonder, how politicians in the opposition parties have become prisoners of their resolve to oppose and not lead by  a showing an example!

We remember Mahatma Gandhi ceremonially on his birth and death anniversary days, and perhaps while celebrating the Independence and Republic Days! Was he not the person who said,' Be the change, that you want to see'!

The public space where we ought to be normally humane and humanitarian has shrunk and is getting replaced by a political agenda to control and impose! Is it not a regression in the value of human brotherhood!

Have we heard the ruling and opposition parties say to each other, 'Our ideologies are different but we are fellow humans'! Is there a language of understanding or accommodation between them!

Let even nation be a garden of humanity where the collective identity is that of human brotherhood!

360 degree inner movement!

I watched this bird moving 360 degrees in its posture! That brought back some memories.

When I was involved in the governing boards of the Emmanuel Hospital Association, Christian Medical Association of India and Christian medical College, Vellore, one discussion that I keenly listened to was on the 360 degree participatory assessment of the faculty and staff. Those above and below in the hierarchy were to give a report on the performance of a person which was then taken into consideration for evaluating the leaderships skills of a person. It looked a novel idea and I am yet to see it practiced in a manner that it was expected to be done.

It is yet another experience if a person himself or herself can take time once in three to four months to have a day of retreat  to have an overview of the previous months with a desire to know more of oneself. During the years I was involved in organising the faculty retreats at CMC Vellore when Dr George Chandy and Dr Sunil Chandy were directors. I remember using three personal audit forms for the faculty to review their lives: Life, Living and Learning; Communication process ; and Relationship process. Subsequently, I added one more personal audit tool for use during personal retreats- Life in the family. Since I use these personal audit process two or thee times in a year, I have come to believe that there is a dimension within us which remains dark or minimally known to us unless we use a structure to journey inward.

I have come to believe in the value of retreats not as a time just time to listen to what a speaker would say, but as a personal time in silence to listen inwardly and respond to the voice from within to receive instruction, revelation and correction.

It was 37 years ago, Anna and I went for our first one month long Life Revision Seminar organised by Dr Hans Burki, during which, we had a close encounter with our inner experiences.  Becoming familiar with our personal biography, which exists in our remote memory, became a resource for 'revising' the way we live, think, believe and respond. It was one occasion when we realised that life was often lived like being on a conveyor belt following the routines of each day. When we feel good we celebrate and when we feel sad we mourn, both remaining in our subconscious level colouring our thoughts, feelings and attitudes. The past within us alters or guides the way we live. How enriching it can be if we are aware of all that is going on in our lives, most of which are in the  subconscious level.

Yesterday I had a dream of a bush with fruits. Someone was plucking the fruits. I got up at that time from my sleep crying and feeling sad. As I revisited this dream with seven questions that guide us to interpret dreams, I became aware of what was silently going on in my life. Anna would retire shortly and I too in a few months. The dream was a symbol of our lives. God intends our lives to be made as an offering for others. Fruits are for others. The sadness is because of 'losing our fruits' when they are taken away without acknowledgement or taken for granted! Is it not in loosing we shall gain! Is it not giving away the fruits to others the only way of fruits going life to others! They receive the fruits and might plant the seed in the soil for another sapling to grow from it!  So what is sorrowful about it! It became an experience to turn sorrow into gladness at the end of interpreting the dreams. That gave a revised orientation towards others and how I can view them through a grateful optic.

Becoming friendly with our inner world of happenings, relationships, attitudes and responses become possible when we take time to be on a personal retreat. That is one step towards a friendly orientation towards ourselves. That is the beginning of a journey to discover the mystery of many hazy experiences in our lives.  Life is for Living and Learning!

Becoming a pair !

To find birds in a pair is a pleasant sight!

Watching a bird family and tracking them can be a fascinating occupation for bird lovers. Their playfulness, during the mating season is a sight to watch.

I find the Bulbuls friendlier. They come close to the human dwellings. They are yet to go the bird feed and water bath in our garden.

But they do not appear strange or frightened. They even allowed close ups of photos.

One way to pick up gentler manners is learn to befriend birds. While bird tracking we behave to tune in to the bird behaviour.

Is that not the way to build relationships with others- by honouring and accepting their way of behaviour and practices! Others help us to grow and change! Our companions are our formators!

On a frosty morning!

I almost missed these sights yesterday!

I went about looking for usual birds and bird movements until, I noticed a flutter in a bush. It was a Tailorbird.

Underneath the bush I noticed these rose flowers appearing frosty!

What a sight!

There is beauty in small things, but they miss us as we are tuned to look for bigger things or experiences.

Being with a friend in conversation or sending a mail to a person who is adjusting to a new circumstance or phoning a person to remind him or her of your thoughts are small things but enormously meaningful and uplifting in purpose.

Practice doing small acts of kindness to each other!

A dry tree is made different !

A dry tree in our garden !

How different the tree became when the Kingfisher arrived on the tree!

Adding meaning, purpose, richness and aesthetics to every situation is the calling for humans!

I pondered over it after watching this spectacular sight since the Kingfisher was spotted on the tree!

How can I make a difference in my own situation ! I feel that the department where I work has dragged on with much less of its normal fullness, since the COVID 19 pandemic  dislocated the services in the department. I feel clueless to bring it back to its full life.

The Christmas Cheer event in the department which took place in the first week of December for the last seven years could not be held due to the pandemic. That was an occasion when we felt connected with each other and with many other people!

What gives greater meaning at work place is relationships and collaborative spirit!

Waterbirds on Sunday morning!

I noticed these waterbirds in four adjacent coconut palms on Sunday morning. They are not native birds and are not commonly seen in our garden.

When birds arrive different from the usual pattern, there is a usual reason! Is the cyclonic storm in the Bay Bengal one reason for birds scattering themselves in land!

I like the way these birds decorated the palm trees for most of the morning from dawn to a long time afterwards till they had drained their wings and finished grooming!
