Watching this Finch stopping in our courtyard for a halt, during its flight, to carry grass, to make a nest elsewhere was a delightful sight to watch in the morning!
A nest is its intent. From being single to be together with another bird! Usually birds amen nest while they are in courtship. Some birds make the nest and look out for courtship.
The nest is the symbol of togetherness.
The sense of togetherness is the gift we can bring for cohesive living. Some birds have another habit worthy of attention and consideration. They so make the nest that it would last beyond one mating season. The pair might not return to the same nest during the next mating season. The nest is left behind for other birds to use to lay eggs.
To think that these acts of consideration for others can occur in the avian world is surprising!
The avian behaviour of choosing the time to become a pair, nest, lay eggs and welcome chicks, is a natural instinct for birds. The pair of birds pattern their behaviour towards togetherness and most birds share in the parenting responsibilities!
I have had some concerns for a while now, about the way parenting responsibilities are perceived by husbands and wives. The parents in their aspiration to secure a better existential future for themselves, now look to migrate to some countries, which are open for people to come as permanent residents. During this process of migration, till parents find suitable jobs and houses to live in, children are left behind with grandparents or relatives. I have come across several instances of pre-school children feeling the separation anxiety experience on account of long absence of both parents or one of the parents. The grandparents owing to the constraints of ageing cannot engage the pre-school children in activities to promote the interactive experiences, essential for pre-school readiness at four years. The result is unhappy school entry and maladjustment in the class room environment. Some children suffer from withdrawal symptoms at school entry, due to denial of TV viewing, to which they were used to, during most of the wakeful hours for months or years.
There is something to learn from this bird above. It prepares itself to be together with another bird. It takes the initiative to prepare the nest.
I feel parenting practices are under strain and compromise in the culture I live in!
A society that ignores the seminal role of sound parenting practices would create a generation of children who grew up feeling distant from parents and bonding! They grow up deficient in the nurturing environment that pre-school children would need. The fabric of relationships which create a sense of belonging in children, when denied, children grow up feeling less, esteeming themselves less and relating less!
We are at a threshold of a crisis of sound parenting practices!
I wish parents would feel more responsible towards their home, parenting, and husband-wife intimacy!
