An opportunity gained or lost!

After having been accompanying medical students for about thirty years now, I have come to conclude that many like this bird plunge into the lake finds its food and make the profession richer and nobler!

But there are some who fail to seize the opportunity to use time, opportunities or invitations to go on to carry the mantle of responsibility of learning and growing!

Now that the National Entrance and Eligibility Test (NEET) is mandatory to get into post graduate training, the focus has shifted to get into post graduate training rather than grow to put on on the garment of nobility of the profession, while still being focussed on advanced training! I found out that there are foundation courses now offered even for the fist year medical students to prepare themselves for the  NEET five years later, when they finish the internship.

The focus has shifted from bedside learning to text book based acquisition of information to pass an entrance test. Now that the grades one gets in the four  university examinations during the five year training in medicine does not matter, and NEET grade alone matters, information acquisition has become the prime aspiration of many medical students.

So there is declining emphasis on being honest, well mannered, courteous, caring, meticulous, trustworthy, patient-freindly, sympathetic, self-giving, team work, sound conduct and character.... there is so much we have advanced in health care... but are their losses that betray the vocation in medicine!
