A pioneering Journey!

Prof Ewelyn Elias and his wife Irene visited MOSC medical College on their way to Munnar, accompanied by Dr. Eapen, Medical Superintendent of CMC Hospital, Vellore, couple days ago.

Prof. Ewelyn pioneered liver transplant in the united Kingdom, by establishing a Liver Unit at Birmingham general hospital, which seems to do the largest number of liver transplants in Europe as of now, sometimes two to three transplants even in a day.

In an interview, he told me about his decision to go this way for the last thirty years! 'Why Should a young person die of complications of hepatitis when he can live twenty five or more years after transplant!' He pursued this mission as a calling form God.

In all the ordeals and resistance he has had to face to get state funding for this transplant programme, he felt that he was guided by God and His blessings accompanied his efforts.

Prof Elias and his wife Irene brought a breath of fresh air to the gathering of the faculty through their charming presence and encouraging words- fame and achievement have only made them humble, sociable and caring!
