Stories of naming flowers!

The plant, Bleeding heart vine with its white calyx and red corolla inside which look a colourful is now in blossom in our garden.

While looking into its history in Wikipedia, I discovered that the name of this plant originated in memory of the wife of Dr William Cooper Thompson, a missionary physician in Nigeria (1829-1878).

While searching for this, I found that the plant Bougainvillea was named after the navigator and explorer Loius Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811), by the French naturalist Philibert Commerson who discovered the plant in Brazil, in1768 in gratitude for the expedition leader navigating the ship safely to Brazil.  The paper flower since then is an ornamental plant globally.

The name of flower Marigold originates from the English term, 'Mary's gold', a tribute to Virgin Mary.

The plants and flowers have an etymological history!

I felt fascinated by these background information that Wikipedia offers which results from the resources that volunteers offer to give information.

What a gift of knowledge and information we receive from people who care to communicate and share!

What a community of sojourners on earth who care for others!
