A Golden Jubilee addition to MOSC Medical College!

The above building facing the national High way, the atrium leading to the earlier existing hospital buildings of the MOSC Medical College Hospital is gong to be dedicated on 2nd February, 2023. It is a building which would locate the emergency department, hospital registration counters, Pharmacy, and accessory facilities and amenities for patients.

The two portraits of the founders of the hospital in the earlier entrance of the hospital remind of its history.

Mr Chackopilla, a philanthropist of the town was the founder secretary of the hospital, who envisioned a mission hospital to be at the door step of a rural community, who otherwise had to go to Ernakulum, or Muvttupuzha for health care. He is a legend of his time in hospitality, mindfulness and generosity, whose life and work resonate quietly in the hospital corridors as an inspiration. He became face of the hospital where people cane to seek health care and go home satisfied.

Dr K.C.Mammen, who was the founding director became a right hand to Mr Chackopilla in designing  and building a hospital of 300 beds which subsequently expanded to have all the basic specialities with a commendable record in patient care. Later it became a Medical College of good repute. Dr Mammen who was a professor of Paediatrics left his position at the Christian Medical College, Vellore along with a few of his contemporaries at CMC to come to MOSC to begin the tradition of caring for a rural community, who were waiting for a tertiary  health care facility.

The logo of the hospital above, exemplifies its vision of wholistic health care. Having had my father and mother come to this hospital on several occasions, I feel that this approach to health care was a foundational value of the hospital, which made it be a first port of call for patients living  in the adjoining towns.

The current secretary, Mr Joy P Jacob, has in his term of service facilitated the hospital and medical college to make a mark in the health care sector in Kerala. A Nursing college, Medical college, health Management training college, and post graduate training in different specialties, post doctoral studies in Neonatology, etc got added during his term of service. I remember hearing Mr Joy Jacob speak about the 'atrium' on a few occasions during the last five years or so. Although the COVID season affected the hospital services, Mr Jacob persevered to build the atrium, which now stands as a tribute to his keenness to add more facilities for the visiting patients.

I noticed yesterday a pot of plants, (below) in the quadrangle of the departure hall of the airport at Kochi and felt fascinated by its appealing presence and the richness of its flower. In that large quadrangle, this plant stood out with distinct visibility and an impressive appeal.

That is my wish for MOSC Medical College and Hospital that the hospital will be place of fragrance and blessing to all those who come seeking health care and those who work to bring health care to all those who come to hospital.

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to visit the atrium which is getting ready for dedication on 2nd Feb, 2023. I happened to ask a supervisor overseeing the arrangements for giving the final touch before it is open to public, as to how people would respond to this new facility. He told me 'that the facility is a valuable asset. All of us who work here has now an opportunity to upscale our caring attitude to match the new physical facilities'. I thought he spoke from his heart.

The call is to make the physical facility a means for optimising care to touch people at the core of their needs!
