A gallery of birds

It was yesterday, Anna and I realised that parakeets feed from our star fruit tree. Seeing this parakeet fly with the star fruit between its beaks to the coconut palm tree in our garden,  to be with its pair to share the morning meal was a fascinating sight for us.

During the next ten minutes, before they flew away, they shared the meal between themselves.

We have about thirty species of birds visiting us in our garden.

Tracking their movements  and habits give us a new understanding about how birds behave in different situations.

During the afternoon heavy rain fall, I found this Drongo (photo above) liking to be out in the rain. Through its bird calls, it was calling others. There  were three other Drongo birds in other trees braving the rain. I later found out that this species of birds like getting wet in rain.

I was happy to have been able to watch a Kingfisher, Wood Pecker and a Barbet during their flight movement. They looked colourful and aerodynamically displaying a visual feast of the science and art of lying.

I was thinking today about the loss of the habitat of hundreds of birds with over 1500 trees cut or transplanted during the central vista project of building a new Parliament House in New Delhi. It is a loss of history of about hundred years or more for generations of birds.

A civil society that is proactive for making the environment bird friendly transcend to live consciously of the needs of the flora and fauna around us. I wish that it will be reality!
