It was a misty morning in our garden a few days ago! Even after the sun had risen the visibility was reduced. It was after 9 am even the flowers in the trees were visible in the garden.
The light around us makes all things visible!
It is the light within us that gives us the optic to see what is around us.
The light within us, if tainted with darkness, then we see what is around us in a subjective way.
A flower in the garden becomes an object of interest only as much as a person is drawn by its striking presence with its colourfulness!
Those who can see a flower and behold it, have an inner optic of fullness and openness!
When Pope Francis wanted to bid farewell to his dog in his dying moments, he conveyed that openness and fullness!
I wish there is a change in the way we see and behold!
A retired teacher visits senior citizens in our village, who are home bound! When he mentioned this to me a few days ago, I was reminded that there are those who are often forgotten or pushed to the periphery!
To be able to see those, who are less visible and yet respond to their needs are the Good Samaritans in our community!
I remember something that a consultant in Physical medicine and Rehabilitation did a few months ago, by organising a workshop to familiarise technicians to adapt wheel chairs for children. To suggest to a child to use a wheel chair for mobility is an advice a doctor might suggest to the family when child's voluntary mobility is compromised. This consultant found out that individual adaptation of a wheel chair was needed depending on the motor strength of the upper arm and trunk control. There were no guidelines to help technicians to follow. This young consultant saw, what many missed to see and responded to it with a programme that defined the standard operating practices for modifying a wheel chair for children.
Seeing to act !
As one gets older, there are more health care needs. I am aware of this myself. I met a a senior citizen recently who needs a walking stick for walking. He walks about half a kilometre a day to meet a visually impaired citizen and read to him news, good stories and portions from the Scripture.
I marvel at such people who transcends beyond themselves to sense the needs of others and respond in a touching way!
