Clowning in CMC

I cannot but add some more reflections on the staff entertainment at CMC Vellore on last Saturday. Three faculty members who were actively involved in planning for the entertainment visited us yesterday. That gave us a little more of the background information about the way it was organised.

The organiser, Professor of paediatrics, Dr. Valsan, the Prinicpal, Dr. Alfred and the Director Dr. Sunil were class mates for their undergraduate training at CMC Vellore. They created the story line for the evening, with a good blend of original and borrowed ideas. The evening of music, dance, acting, and dialogue were meant to tease the faculty and students in a moderate way.

What I liked most about the evening was how the staff established some good practices to convey how healthy and wholesome entertainment can be organised. The function started on time, a message for the students, who sometimes start their functions much after the scheduled starting time. The fun generated through teasing the faculty and students was clean and hilarious. It would not have been seen, even by those who were targeted, as anything other than good humour. The dance, songs, dialogues, etc. were most appropriately chosen so that there was nothing embarrassing even for children. The way the faculty was willing to 'let go' of every inhibition to make it special for the students was an eye opener to the students about the way the staff attempt to promote informal relationships with the student community.

CMC Vellore is constantly innovating and changing, yet it is rooted in values that contribute to the formative experience of students.

An institution becomes the alma mater, because the students are drawn by its heritage and noble traditions!
