The eco-ethics !

I find it inspirational to watch how the tender leaves become a cover of protection for a bud that is sprouting n rose bushes!

In the bird house in our garden, three pairs of adult Budgerigar birds have been watching over their nests since the hatchlings were born! One of the pairs is seated at the entrance to the nest most of the day and night.

To me it suggests the order in nature! The weak and the fragile grows up sheltered!

The bio-ethics advocates for the protection of the unborn baby! But the termination of pregnancy continues uninhibited. There is a lobby of pro-lifers, who create awareness about the silent cry of the unborn, 'let me live'! That is a feeble voice which gets displaced by existential reasons for which parents find justifiable arguments.

It is a new approach in India to demolish the houses of people with bull-dozers often at night, who have put up unauthorised temporary shelters. They are the 'have nots' in our society. They suffer another blow to their struggle to survive!

I watch scores of buds in the rose bushes in our garden and feel moved by the habit of plants to protect the sprouting buds, giving them a chance to blossom!

The survey done in 2015 on induced abortions in India, the results of which were published in 2017, the estimate was around 15.6 million. The government data of induced abortion conducted in authorised facilities was around 900,000 in 2024-25. I quote from the data available in the internet. I suppose it is not a fully dependable data! One Obstetrician mentioned to me once, that she would receive about 100 requests for facilitating abortion in a year. She is a dedicated pro-life activist.

It raises doubts about the impact of pro-life advocacy and sound application of bio-ethics in health care practice!

I write this with sadness and concern. The book that I authored in 1982 was intended to be a starter for a pro-life movement in India. But I did not pursue that interest actively!

However, there are many non-governmental organisations who are active in promoting bio-ethical education by organising online training programme. The study of bio-ethics is now in the curriculum of undergraduate training! There are departments of bioethics in some medical colleges.

What a delight it was to connect the sheltered buds to eco-ethics in nature!
