I watched this celebration in our village in the evening to congratulate the newly elected Panchayat member from our village. People speak highly of him and is known to be friendly and helpful.
What strikes me about this election is the negative campaign that was conspicuous. The Congress led front accused the communist led state government of corruption. The communist front accused the congress of aligning with the 'Hinduvata' movement and the BJP. I hardly noticed in the media, listing of achievements and contributions of any front in the last five years.
One thing is obvious that issues like corruption, partisan approach to governance, or opportunism are no more issues which would go against any party. People look for popular people no matter whether they are just, upright or fair!
The philosophy of governance is despised by the current election process. There is considerable influence of money in persuading people to vote for a particular party. Kerala is considered a state of high literacy and education. People are used for favouring a party that promises some advantages. We are no more in an era of practising value based political judgements in election!
No wonder an authoritarian rule is currently taking shape globally where those who have access to control by force, threat or inducements seem to have considerable influence in society!
This is the season of Christmas, when the opposite of this was what Jesus of Nazareth came to live and die for. He sought after people to help them to live righteously and soberly.
We live in difficult times, where the leaders do not govern keeping the felt needs of people in mind. Otherwise would any government have ignored the farmers who live in the streets for over two weeks in Delhi to represent their loss due to the new farm laws!
O! that we would be a people who feel and are mindful of others! Are not leaders and rulers given that position to serve!
