I watched this Bulbul gather sticks for its nest from our garden!
It is during the monsoon season the red whiskered Bulbuls build cup shaped nests in bushes, trees, and buildings using twigs, grass, sometimes paper and plastic.
I noticed a pair of Bulbuls coming to the feeding table a few times during the last one week.
One interesting habit of the Bulbuls is to search for food if the feeding bowl is empty. They come behind the cottage and look for an access to the dining room where the fruit basket is placed. They have become familiar with its place. Given a chance, I suspect, they would prefer to come inside the house rather than feed from the feeding table outside.
The Bulbuls sing tunefully. They are mindful in behaviour.
Before starting to feed, most Bulbuls will call out for other birds to inform them of food in the bowl.
It is a pleasant sight to watch, how a Bulbul waits before it starts feeding. Often taking turns to feed is the practice.
Anna and I had an experience of a Bulbul pair nest in our backyard two years ago. They had three fledglings.
A senior citizen who is an avid reader spends most of his time reading! When he came to visit us, he happened to notice the bird feeding station. He got enthused by it and is now looking out for birds around his house to befriend them. His one comment was that it was a relaxing hobby !
For Anna and myself, it is a learning experience in observing and learning about mindful behaviour birds show towards each other, more so in some species of birds.
What an enriching experience! Birds come with messages! They are also messengers!
