The sky gathered clouds all on a sudden and an invading darkness consumed the brightness of the mid day.
I walked out into the courtyard.
There was one Bulbul perched in a tall tree, a Drongo on a nutmeg tree, Daphne was walking back to her kennel yard with a subdued look and another Bulbul looked disturbed at the feeding table!
They were signals of how birds and Daphne sensed the heavy downpour which were to follow soon!
I too felt disturbed wondering if a strong wind would accompany the rain fall.
I remembered a passage I read from the book of psalms in the Bible where the Psalmist described his meditation: 'God sends forth springs in the valleys; they flow between the mountains; they give drink to every beast of the field, the wild donkeys quench their thirst. Besides them the birds of the heavens dwell; they lift up thier voices among the branches. He waters the mountains from His upper chambers; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works' (Psalm 104: 10-13).
Soon it started to rain and it was heavy but for a sort while!
There is an order upon earth. That is what sustains life on earth.
An editorial I read in a national news paper referred to an imbalance that has set in, in our environment. There is a pace of developmental activity of construction of houses and industrial complexes which is not balanced with sustainable goals for the environment. The editorial cautioned about more human created disaster because we do not respect the 'order' that earth requires of us.
I notice this in the feeding table. If a Barbet were to come, it would take the banana from the bowl and fly away to a tree for to feed by itself! If Bulbuls were to come to feed they feed by pecking on the fruit and fly away when they had their share.
A Barbet bird is a 'taker' and a Bulbul bird is a 'giver'!
I have a suspicion that it is the same pattern we see among ourselves. We can be takers to the extent of exhausting the order and resources in nature! Or we can be mindful givers knowing that the earth needs its protection to preserve all of us!
The meditation of the Psalmist reminded me of the lessons of stewardship that got introduced to my thinking during the school days. There was an annual festival in the school where I studied of planting of saplings of trees, vegetables and flowering plants in a large ground. That is how the school introduced an attitude of caring for our environment!
Gos is the provider and we are the keepers!
What a privilege and responsibility!
